As most laptop batteries are composed of rechargeable AA cells, why not
take an old one apart and rebuild it with redchargeable lithium ion AA
cells ?They ought to have a much longer life per charge. If I had an HP
Omni, which I like a lot, I'd look into that, if I needed longer battery
life.

I think one li-ion cell is rated at 3.6 volts, with good voltage swing between full charge and full drain. Try the NiMH AA rechargables.
